Women’s Jumpers & Cardigans: different materials, the same high standards

Originally, only wool was used to craft SAINT JAMES jumpers. This high-quality wool built the brand’s reputation and gave birth to warm, almost waterproof sailor jumpers.

The wool used for our women’s Jumpers & Cardigans is spun in Europe. When it arrives at our Saint-James workshops, where it is kept at a precise temperature and humidity level, its quality is inspected by the expert eyes of our Master Knitters, also known as hosiery makers.

Wool is a noble material that is part of the SAINT JAMES DNA. So much so that in 2020, the company decided to join the Collectif Tricolore, which works to rebuild a French wool industry, from shearing to knitting.

While the majority of our women’s Jumpers & Cardigans are made of wool, other materials have been introduced over time, such as linen and cotton—the latter having long been used for our Breton shirts. Selected with the same rigour as our wool, these natural fibres and their blends allow us to bring new designs to life.

Women who appreciate casual-chic attire can find V-neck jumpers in fine-knit linen and cotton, nautical sweatshirts in wool and cotton blends, jumpers in structured or soft cotton knit, as well as zipped cardigans in knitted cotton or round-neck cardigans in organic cotton.

The wool and cotton fisherman’s collar jumper perfectly illustrates the fusion of SAINT JAMES’s maritime heritage and contemporary influences. The smock-style collar and the famous stripes, in jersey, integrate seamlessly with the navy blue wool, offering a marriage of tradition and modernity through a blend of natural materials.

How to choose the right cut for a women’s jumper?

While body shape is a factor, it shouldn’t stop you from choosing a style you love. Above all, it’s about following your heart and your personal taste.

However, if you are hesitant and wondering what might suit you best, here are a few tips to help you decide.

Long jumpers work very well for slender silhouettes, as they emphasise a tall frame. For shorter women, shorter jumpers that do not cover the hips are preferable and can be worn with high-waisted jeans to balance the look.

V-neck jumpers, as well as those in a fine knit, are particularly flattering for curvaceous silhouettes, while a cable-knit jumper will enhance more delicate frames.

How to wear a cardigan?

Long considered a classic, women’s cardigans can now be paired with any look, from the most understated to the most extravagant.

SAINT JAMES zipped cardigans are perfect for a casual-chic outfit, pairing beautifully with raw denim slim-fit jeans and a pair of trainers. The elegance of long cardigans combines ideally with the simplicity of chinos and court shoes.

Buttoned cardigans are essential wardrobe staples. Depending on your mood, the season, or the occasion, they can be worn with a pencil skirt and boots, or with faded boyfriend jeans and canvas shoes, or even over a denim skirt with coloured tights.

They can be worn fully buttoned, or open over a shirt or a feminine camisole. For an outfit with more character, you can fasten just two or three buttons at the bottom, or tuck a single panel of the cardigan into a skirt or high-waisted jeans.

Playing with contrasts is always interesting: a very sober cardigan pairs wonderfully with relaxed jeans, while a hooded zipped cardigan looks great with smarter trousers.

Colours also allow you to vary styles and moods. For a rock-inspired look, a navy cardigan can be paired with a printed T-shirt, blended with a denim skirt, or, for a more classic outfit, worn with beige or cream tailored trousers.
