Discovering our Ateliers
A visit to the Atelier is a true immersion into the world of SAINT JAMES. Everything begins here, in the town that gave the brand its name: Saint-James.
Les Tricots SAINT JAMES invite you to discover their traditional craftsmanship behind the making of the authentic sailor jumper and the iconic Breton shirt by opening the doors of their workshops, just a stone’s throw from Mont-Saint-Michel.
Since 1889, SAINT JAMES has upheld the French artisanal tradition in textile manufacturing. Awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, come and discover a story — and the artisans — behind a heritage of excellence.
You will be told the story of the making of the famous “true sailor jumper”, knitted so tightly it is said to be water-resistant, from design through to production.

Discover the Atelier
The tour itinerary
Accompanied by Manon, our guide, you will set off to discover a century-old craftsmanship that is the pride of our company. After an introduction to the history of SAINT JAMES,
your visit will begin in our Knitting Atelier, one of the largest knitting machine facilities in Europe. There, you will witness the versatility of our master knitters, who expertly manage up to six machines at once.

You will then discover one of SAINT JAMES’ most emblematic crafts: raccoutrage, or hand finishing. With their skilful, delicate fingers, our menders are the guardians of the impeccable quality of our jumpers. They correct stitches missed by the machine, remove any foreign fibres, and perfect details such as the elbow patches.

You will then continue your tour in our garment Atelier, where our experienced seamstresses work in autonomous teams. Here again, you will be introduced to a unique skill: remaillage (linking). This technique makes it possible to assemble the collar and body of our iconic sailor jumpers while preserving both elasticity and strength.
