The Breton shirt
Combed or carded cotton, anti-UV fabric...
What material will suit you best ?
For over 130 years, SAINT JAMES has been dedicated to crafting quality sailor striped shirts in France, in its workshops located in Normandy, in the eponymous town of Saint-James.
Combed cotton, carded cotton, UVYL... SAINT JAMES materials are varied and each possesses specific characteristics. To assist you in choosing the sailor striped shirt that suits you best, here's a brief overview.
Carded cotton
What is carding?
Carding is a process common to all cottons: it involves brushing and untangling the fibers to make them parallel.
Why choose carded cotton?
Carded cotton is a heavy, traditional cotton with a "rough" texture. More textured and rigid than combed cotton, it is ideal for those seeking a Breton shirt with a bold and authentic style.
And what about sizing ?
For feminin fits, we usually advise to go a size up. For masculine and unisex fits, you may choose your usual size.
Combed cotton
What is combing?
While all cottons are carded, not all are combed. Cotton fibers are combed, separating the longest fibers and removing the shorter ones, resulting in a smoother finish.
Why choose combed cotton?
Combed cotton is softer than carded cotton, perfect for those seeking comfort. Available in various thicknesses (weights) at SAINT JAMES, you can choose a lightweight model like the Minquiers or the Minquidame, or opt for more structure with the Naval.
And what about sizing ?
You may choose your usual size.
Anti-UV UVYL
What is UVYL?
Made from polyamide (at SAINT JAMES, we choose recycled polyamide), UVYL is a synthetic material with a soft touch and anti-UV properties.
Why choose UVYL?
UVYL is the perfect ally for sun-sensitive skin, those heading to sunny destinations, or those who have heard the call of the sea.
And what about sizing ?
For Garde-Côte and Proprano fits, we usually recommend to go a size up. For other fits, you may choose your usual size, or go a size up for more comfort.
